My research group integrates observational, experimental, and modeling approaches to understand how microbial communities interact with and shape the transport of particulate organic matter in the ocean. Members of these communities in turn degrade the particles, thereby shaping and determining the flux of organic carbon and nutrients into the deep ocean. We also use statistical and mechanistic models to integrate data and better understand microorganisms in their environments, as well as perform experiments to see how entire communities respond to perturbations.

This work is thoroughly rooted in practical experience and is constantly aimed at amplifying the voices of marginalised forest communities.
Our team of coders developed an app to work with AR headsets, such as Microsoft’s HoloLens headset, in order to project this film into the forest. Gooii worked with BAFTA-winning director Nick Hutchings to create an interactive holographic film. We imagine that the olfactory memory of the kelp forest is multiple, linked to what is meaningful for different marine fauna. This work has been mentioned in publications including USA Today, The Economist, and on NPR.
